Standard 7 - Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/caregivers, and the community
Final Practical Experience
2018 Term 3
7.3 - Engage with Parents and Carers
Situation: The school that I was placed at used the communication platform Class Dojo. Throughout FPE 1 and 2 I was able to connect to this application and communicate with parents/caregivers through this platform.
Action: As this was an application that I had never used before I had to download it and get the head of primary to add me as a teacher to my classrooms page. I then explored the app and got a quick lesson from my mentor in how to effectively use it. Throughout my final practical experience I used to Class Dojo to easily communicate with the student’s parents. I would often post on the class story a description of the day’s activities accompanied by photos of their children completing the tasks. I was also able to post on each individual students story, where I would share with parents their child’s results in assessments, their progress and work that they completed in the classroom, as well as give them reminders about upcoming events and overdue items.
Outcome: By using the communication platform Class Dojo, I was able to easily communicate with parents privately, as well as on a whole class level. It allowed me to inform and interact with all parents about the activities that we were completing in class, as well as explicitly explain the focus and the learning that occurred throughout each lesson.
Future Action Plan: I feel that it is extremely important to have open and positive communication with parents and caregivers. I understand that each school may have a different method for communication with families, so in the future I plan to keep my knowledge and understanding of a variety of effective and relevant methods of communication up to date.
Evidence: Below I have attached some screenshots from posts that I made on Class Dojo. These posts were uploaded onto the whole class story so that all parents could see what the students were up to in class at that time.

7.4 - Engage with Professional Teaching Networks and Broader Communities
Situation: On the first day of my FPE 1 all of the staff from the school was attending the 2018 Christian Schools WA State Conference located at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. I was invited by the principal to accompany my mentor teacher and attend the conference myself.
Action: I viewed the invitation to attend this conference as an extremely valuable opportunity for professional development, as well as to get out into the world of teaching. Throughout the conference I was able to meet and network with a variety of other teachers from a range of schools located around Perth. I was also able to introduce myself to and spend time with teachers from my own school that I normally would not have anything to do with.
Throughout one of the workshops I attended, which was aimed at providing graduates with some guidance, I was also able to connect with the workshop leader and other new teaching graduates from around Perth.
Outcome: Attending the conference offered the opportunity to get to know other teachers within my school, which was of great benefit later when they were able to offer assistance and guidance throughout the rest of my practical experience.
Future Action Plan: I plan to remain in contact with many of the teachers that I met throughout my practical experience, as well as those that I networked with at the conference. These teachers, both experienced and graduates will be an incredibly valuable resource throughout my teaching career as they can continue to offer advice, guidance and support.

Practical Experience
2018 Term 1
Professional Development
Throughout the first two days of my practical experience I attended all of the staff meetings and professional development sessions with my mentor. These interesting experiences provided me with an insight to some of the workings within a school and gave me the opportunity to introduce myself to the principal, the administration and to all members of the teaching staff.
The following documents are an outline of the staff meetings and professional development that took place.
