Critical Learning Incident - 8th February 2018
Situation:
The critical learning incident I chose occurred on the Thursday afternoon of the second week of my placement. The parent of one student had asked for their child to be kept awake during rest time, as they had not been sleeping at night. Throughout rest time the student was fine and quietly read a book, however as we tried to move to the next class she began to get worked up.
Task:
At the time of the incident the EA and myself were leading the transition from the classroom to the library. It was throughout this time that she began to work herself up and began to throw a tantrum.
Actions:
In response to this situation, both myself and the EA took the student aside and calmly explained that her options were to join the rest of the class, or be taken back to the classroom where she would have to have a time out until she had calmed down.
Result:
By taking the student aside and clearly explaining her options she was able to calm down and decide that she wanted to rejoin the rest of her class. The rest of the students and the library teacher were then able to enjoy the rest of the session. Throughout this experience I have learnt that a students actions can be caused by factors other than misbehavior, such as being extremely tired, and it is sometimes best to explain to the student their options, and always to remain calm.
