Standard 3 - Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning
Final Practical Experience 2
2018 Term 3
3.4 Select and Use Resources
Situation: I believe that students learn best when they are given the opportunity to explore and investigate concepts using a variety of different resources in a variety of different experiences. Throughout my practical experience I created and used a wide range of hands-on, interactive resources, both in the explicit teaching or demonstration of concepts, and throughout the activities.
Action: Some of the resources that I created and used throughout my practical experience are shown below.
Literacy:
Rainbow rice sensory tub - Students were able to search through the rainbow rice to find the letters that make up the CVC words that were on laminated cards. I created this resource for students to use during open playtime and also to be used as a manipulative throughout my lessons. It provided students the opportunity practice their literacy skills while still experience sensory

Peg Puzzles – This resource was used during a literacy rotation in which students were focusing on tricky words. The focus words had been written across 3 small pop sticks and students had to match them to complete the puzzle. This task was easy for some students while others found it difficult.
Pop-stick word builder – This resource was used during a literacy rotation in which students were focusing on tricky words. The focus word was written on a large pop stick and students had to find and match the lettered pegs that make up each word. The students thoroughly enjoyed this task and even made it into a competition.
Numeracy:
Ice cream building task – Students chose a numbered cone and then used the tongs to build an ice cream with that amount of scoops. I created this resource for students to use during open playtime and also to be used as a manipulative throughout my lessons. It provided students with the opportunity to practice counting and building collections while also developing fine motor skills.
Egg cartons task - Students used the tongs to collect the numbered eggs (ping pong balls) and put them into the corresponding numbered space on the egg carton. . I created this resource for students to use during open playtime and also to be used as a manipulative throughout my lessons. It provided students with the opportunity to practice number recognition and matching while also developing fine motor skills.
Number line Slider – I created this resource to be used throughout addition and subtraction lessons as a physical and visual manipulative.
Floor Number line – I created this resource to use as a clear and physical demonstration manipulative. This was used during a particular lesson on subtraction where students had to jump down the number line the number that they were taking away.
Outcome: These resources were all very successful in terms of learning and student engagement. They were also very adaptable and were able to be used throughout a range of different activities and times throughout the class. The only thing that could have worked better was the floor number line because the students would sometimes jump incorrectly (as you can see in the video above). I would have fixed this by spreading out the numbers a little more.
Future Action Plan: As I know that the resources I have created were beneficial in student learning I know that I will continue to be using and adapting them in the future. I also plan to continue researching and making as many hands-on, interactive, authentic rand adaptable resources as possible.
Final Practical Experience 1
2018 Term 1, Weeks 1 & 2
Throughout my two weeks of practical experience at The Kings College I planned and taught 4 mathematics lessons, focused on number (1-10), as well as leading 4 literacy sessions using the Jolly Phonics program. Some of the lesson plans I created are linked below.

I also used a range of visual resources throughout my lessons such as counting videos, books, toys and the jolly phonics songs. The students responded to these visuals positively and by the end of the two weeks were actively engaged, as well as singing and counting along with the songs.
